My Taxtime rant against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) - Paying taxes

I appreciate what this great country has done for me as a small business owner, I really do. I don't agree with the war in Iraq or the way we export all of our jobs to China and India but in general this country treats me pretty great. HOWEVER. (Yes, there is an aside here....) I just sent a HUGE tax payment to the IRS and it was almost physically painful to do so.

I know the money goes to good use (right???) I mean, we have social and civil services keeping our streets clean and our kids healthy (right????) and we can buy whatever we need without huge sales tax and needing a permit for every little thing (right????) I mean - taxes are a necessary evil, and while I can appreciate what they're for it still HURTS LIKE HELL to send that check off in the post.

The ONLY consolation is that little check box where they ask if you want to donate $3 or however much to the 'Presidential Campaign Fund' and I'm like HELL NO!!

Saved myself three bucks right there, yes I did.

No you didn't, you idiot! Those three bucks are paid for by the government, out of the taxes you paid. It doesn't cost or save you anything.

I wonder if Treasury Secretary Nominee Timothy Geithner needed a payday loan to repay the $42,000 he owed the IRS. See, it seems the likely next head of the United States Treasury messed up on his taxes. From 2001-2004 he worked for the International Monetary Fund, and apparently U.S. tax law mixed with working for an international company was too complicated for Geithner. Good thing getting a payday loan is nice and simple. Obama and his team are defending the nominee, saying the errors were an honest mistake and Geithner is the right person to head the Treasury in this time of financial crisis. Well, I certainly believe it is possible that he has learned a lot in the five years since he messed up his taxes. And he did pay back the money he owed plus interest. Still, I am hesitant about putting a man who couldn’t even get his own taxes right in charge of the entire country’s finances.
